Bears Lose To Vikings. The Pits remain the Pits

By Old and Blue - Posted on 29 November 2009

It's good to live in Texas, sometimes. Because here, they know good football, and even if the Bears game had been the primary Fox game, here in Texas, they would have found a way to black them out.

I didn't see the game. I have no idea why the Lord above saved me from it, but He did. That's Texas speak, btw, and it feels just right, just right now.

What I could tell from the line score was that my earlier defense on this blog of Cutler may have possibly been premature, but that, for sure, my disgust with the Pits was right on target.

For those unfamiliar with the term "pit", it's the term football coaches use for the front line. Both sides. It's a mash pit, and, generally, whatever team wins in the mash pit, on any level of play, high school, college, or NFL, wins the game.

There was an article I saw yesterday in the Trib about how Cutler was, statistically, in better shape than almost all the other QBs in the league in terms of sacks.

I guess the article writer hasn't noticed the pressures. Do those get recorded? Oh, yes, they do. And last I saw, Cutler was number two in the league in pressures. In other words, if he doesn't pass as soon as his hands touch the ball he's in deep shit.

Cutler is not Grossman. Cutler is a QB sitting behind a paper bag offensive line. If he takes them out to dinner, I recommend a really  bad restaurant that makes them all sick for the rest of their lives.

The lines on both sides of the ball suck.

Fire Angelo.

Fire da bums already!

To me, the worst thing about the Bears isn't the losses, it's the way they've been transformed from a smash-mouth team into a team that gets pushed around. A lot. That's just not acceptable. This is Chicago; finesse football has no place here.

Lovie must go.

"a smash-mouth team "

Which has one Super Bowl and one NFL Champsionship to show for it in 60 years?

21st Century football is not that bad.

On offense, maybe not that bad. On defense, I want a Bears team that'll smack you in the mouth. So when you're watching the other team methodically marching down the field, you at least get a thrill when a Doug Plank smacks the pee out the ballcarrier.

Both lines are manhandling exactly nobody.

Fun article about Urlacher watching football with a reporter. Makes a questionable comment referring to Forte but all of it seems legitimate. He could post here and nothing would be out of place

“Look, I love Jay, and I understand he’s a great player who can take us a long way, and I still have faith in him,” Urlacher said. “But I hate the way our identity has changed. We used to establish the run and wear teams down and try not to make mistakes, and we’d rely on our defense to keep us in the game and make big plays to put us in position to win. Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth.”

great formula, 3 playoff appearances and 2-3 in the playoffs...

I say we try something else there Urlacher...

When the coaching staff had Orton they thought that he couldn't throw win the game, and thus the only hope was to run the ball.

Now that the coaching staff has Cutler they think that he can just throw and win the game, running game or no running game.

What Urlacher seems to be missing is that when Orton was the QB, the Bears not only had no credible WR's, they also had a line that could run block. This Bears team has no ability to run block, but rather than find a way to compensate for this, the Bears simply abandon the running game altogether.

The Bears didn't have credible receivers or a line last year either...

they did on the other hand have a much better defense...

Draft Board...

Bears should be in top 10 I'm guessing...

2 lineman in the top 10 and 1 WR...

Well, the Broncos will be in the top 10, anyway.

I can imagine the chuckling they're doing about the Cutler trade about now.

aw damn, totaly forgot about that

Promoting. I saw this, too, and was gonna add a new story with this. This is a good read. Sorry I haven't had time to respond to any comments. I just sort of get pissed off when bad football is played in Chicago. Or, maybe I should say, non-physical football. I can actually live with bad football if the opposing team limps out and never wants to set foot here again, even if they win.
