Bears Acquire Gaines Adams from Bucs
The Bears picked up Gaines Adams from the Buccaneers in exchange for their Second Round pick in the 2010 draft. Adams is eligible to play in Atlanta and will travel with the team for theh game. Adams has had success against the Falcons, moreso than against other teams.
One immediate impact of the trade is that the Bears have to cut a player to stay under the roster size limit. The logical choice to me is Matt Toeaina. Adams will be the fourth defensive end, along with Brown, Ogunleye, and Anderson. Idonije can slide back inside more permanently to spell Tommie Harris, Anthony Adams and Marcus Harrison can rotate at NT. Jarron Gilbert could play any position if the coaches can crsah course him throughh it on any given week. 9 defensive linemen should be plenty for the time being.
As an aside, Idonije must really hate the Bears. First he weighs 260 and they ask him to put on 30 pounds. He does it in the offseason and is ready to play DT. They acquire DT help in the offseason and play him at DE. They then ask him to drop those 30 pounds last offseason to play quicker at DE. He does it in the offseason. Now they have a surplus at DE and he is playing DT again. End of rant.
The trade of a second round pick means that the Bears have no first or second round pick in the 2010 draft. I'm not too sad about that given Angelo's lack of success with high draft picks. However, given the trend that the best teams build through the draft, this is a cause for concern. But if you asked me if I'm happy with the use of next year's top picks right now, the answer is "hell, yes"
Overall I'm happy with the trade. Adams was the 4th pick in the draft and is in his third year. He has two years left on his rookie contract, with much of the money already paid out in signing bonus. He hasn't lived up to expectations, but the Bears will leave that task to Miracle Marinelli to get him on track pronto. The cost of a second rounder might seem high, but it's a clear indication that Ogunleye will not be re-signed and Adams provides a ready player to step in and contribute as the starting LE next season.
EDIT: A couple other points to consider:
Is Angelo is probably better off trading his top picks in exchange for proven NFL talent given his drafting ability with top picks?
Will Ogunleye offer much guidance to the man brought in to take his position next season?
Will Adams break out with the Bears after 2 full seasons of mediocrity with the Bucs?
here's rotoworld's take on the trade:
While Bucs GM Mark Dominik mails in the season by dealing off his most gifted pass rusher and nears insertion of an underclassman rookie QB, Bears GM Jerry Angelo is in the talent acquisition business. Trading first-day picks isn't advised, except when the return is a 26-year-old with dominating ability and a contract through 2012. Jim Bates, who's clearly lost his touch, couldn't get enough out of Adams in his first season as Bucs defensive coordinator. It's a good bet that Bears defensive line coach Rod Marinelli will.

This is really nice to read. If anyone can make the guy into something, it's Marinelli. I'm really impressed that Angelo has come off of his love of draft picks to start dealing for real players. It takes a big man to acknowledge his own weaknesses.
Sweet, now give up a 4th or 5th for T.O...
(although sounds likes Bills aren't going to move him, and Bears aren't all that interested)

Bears assistant head coach Rod Marinelli fell in love with Gaines Adams in 2007 when Adams came out of Clemson and Marinelli was the head coach of the Lions.
Now Marinelli gets a chance to work with the player he once coveted.

Adams' base salary is $900,000 this season and his contract runs through 2012. His base is $1.08 million in '10, $1.1 million in '11 and $1.15 million in '12.

The knock on Adams, according to some familiar with the Bucs, is he doesn't play physically and doesn't display any counter moves.

Those salary figures are great. It's really hard to believe that Tampa would move him with those small salaries left. Thinking about moving a baseball contract makes me think this would be an impossible trade in MLB. Think about how much Ogunleye would be looking for in Free Agency. If Adams can come anywhere close to AO's production in 2010 this trade will have been worth it in terms of value. That said, I think an extension for Mark Anderson is probable. He shouldn't demand a huge market in the offseason so the Bears can sign him for a market-reasonable contract.
Speaking of the D-Line going forward, I think it's very likely that Tommie Harris will be cut in the offseason if he doesn't perform this year and Marcus Harrison or Jarron Gilbert do anything at 3-technique this year
Harris only gets released if Lovie beats him out the door. Lovie's only ever had praise for him (other than the suspension last year), even when he hasn't done a thing.
Used to be you'd get some actual, you know, production for your $9 million cap hit.
TE Mike Gaines ends up getting cut...
